Score Yourself For Communication

social-media-550770_1920Are you efficient or a busy fool?

I have been in a position recently of looking for additional contracts and also promoting a WordPress Online Video Course with a colleague.  The varied forms of communication we have experienced have been interesting.  Times have changed friends, phone calls don’t get returned, people say they will do X Y or Z and they don’t.  It can be a hit to the Ego I have to tell you, but is this just an indication of how the recession continues to hit the U.K?  Don’t get me wrong its not because our chat is awful, people genuinely seem too busy.

In 1995 I started working in sales; we were taught to pick up the phone within 3 rings, always return phone calls the same day and god help you if your boss found out you had assured someone you would do something – and didn’t!  Obviously we are in 2016 and life has moved on, but what happened to good business etiquette?

Everyone forgets information, we all make mistakes, our brains can only handle so much information. We do try to be superhero’s but unless you are living in some cartoon world you cannot do everything and be invincible.  In my opinion, people have too much pressure at work and in life, some adapt well to stress but there are people who genuinely cannot cope and things (or people) get forgotten.  Yes, we can have notepads or use tools like Evernote or OneNote but most companies seem to be stretching their staff.

Ask yourself these questions honestly;

  1. Do you return phone calls and emails when you say you will?
  2. Do you give people your full attention when talking or listening?
  3. Do you read documents and actually read the information on the page?
  4. Are you noticing talent and/or opportunities?
  5. Do your staff or team members feel you are approachable?

Don’t be afraid

It can be thought provoking to ask yourself the questions noted above, but it takes a big person to realise their areas for improvement.  That is step 1, the next step is taking action to improve the way you communicate and ask for help.  Assistance could be from a friend, colleague, manager or a professional Coach (like myself).  People that you know personally may not be honest, only because they don’t want to hurt your feelings.  My advice is if you honestly feel you could improve the way you communicate and perform at work, speak to a Coach and aim to be the best version of yourself.

How do I achieve change?

  1. The first thing is to make an appointment with a Coach to talk through your areas of concern.
  2. Agree what is possible and what your short and long term goals are.
  3. Talk through your communication style and what positives / negatives come from your approach (typically).
  4. Meet regularly or talk on the phone to monitor outcomes.
  5. Reward yourself when you start to see results.
