Do You See The Big Picture?

Do You Consult Or Just Do The Job?…..

For as long as I can remember I have always sought out information, knowledge, facts, figures.  One of my ex-bosses once said to me that I could always be relied on to find untapped resources & deliver.  This was when I was in my early 20’s & its a skill that I feel is vital for the success of any business.  My second job, when I was 19yrs old was in an Advertising / PR company – I was the Secretary.  Part of my remit was credit control & book-keeping, for some reason I was always naturally interested in sales units sold & values – then see how the total sales compared to the previous month / year.  Little did I know, this was a good skill for Profit & Loss sheets in years to come!

I get frustrated if people are not forthcomign with information,

I know some people feel threatened if you know too much –

 BUT SERIOUSLY!?!

My approach is to listen, understand & then consult.  If I dont know the answer, I will find out, but I like to think my clients know what I am doing on their behalf.  Nothing gives me more job satisfaction than seeing my clients business develop, or when a website gets launched (that I have built) & hearing positive feedback.  You see, I am a builder.  I love building things, starting things, seeing things develop like a parent would with a child learning to walk.  If something is in my path, I will not sit back & accept it – I will find a way around it, or see if I can knock it down!

Whether its right, or wrong, its my opinion that if people hold back information, the client will go elsewhere.  People need to know that you have their best interest in mind, that if they dont know something, you will explain it in a way that will click into place for them.  A lot of people dont like admitting they dont know something, or simply dont understand.  But it takes a strong person to say ‘Explain that to me again, I dont understand what you mean’.  Truth is it’s probably the person explaining that should take a step back & ask themselves the question ‘Am I being clear & concise?’.

My point is, take a healthy interest in your clients business.  If you want to be part of it for some time, you need to understand it.  Look at the big picture, but also collaborate with other talented people so the client gets the best that you can offer.  I am a big believer in collaboration, so if you find someone on your travels that is as professional as you are, keep them close.  Involve them in projects when you can & more than likely, they will do the same for you.  Reciprocal networking.

Sometimes people don’t know what the next step should be, in this situation they look to the supplier to advise, consult & come up with suggestions.  I fail to understand why some people miss this point – if someone communciates & helps us plan ahead, we both win.

If you feel this is an area that you fall short in, look at business coaching / personal coaching.  I can work with you on a flexible arrangement.  Give you exercises to do, look at the big picture & work steadily towards improving communciation skills.  Approach The Coach / Louise Wightman can be booked for 2 – 3 hours at a time, sessions are either via phone or face-to-face, location permitting.  Make contact today to book an appointment.
